What's the difference between a pandemic and an epidemic?

Apparently, the difference is between the borders closing or staying open. Ed and I were watching the news four days ago on an american channel, and there were odd reports of a killer virus, with the usual precautions, including a stop on international air travel. No big deal, there's a different one every year around the fall. I laughed and told Ed that I guess this year's superflu wanted an early start.
This morning after I sent the kids off to a friend's, I turn on the tv and suddenly the news is announcing that Canada has closed its borders due to the rising pandemic of ... oh hell, I don't even remember, some combination of letters and numbers. Why can't they just call it a bloody superflu?
But seriously, closing the borders?
